One of the hardest things for any human being to do is to be true to who they really, truly are, deep down inside. Especially when their inner truth seems to contradict their exterior reality! For trans people, finding the courage to live as their authentic selves can be incredibly difficult. Trans people face discrimination and hatred from so many fronts, both in their personal lives and from public figures. There’s wrangling and disputes over which public restroom to use and even whether or not trans people can serve their nations military. In the face of so much public and private opposition, finding the courage to come out and transition to their true selves is an act of bravery and defiance.
No matter what, I am true to myself.
There is no need to worry about others
opinions and attitudes,
so long as my own is true.
I know who I am.
I know what I am.
I am myself!
This is my identity,
and no one can strip me of it.
I am myself!
I am lovable,
and kind,
and full of admirable qualities.
My worth lights the sky!
No outside force can strip me
of the indomitable will
and strength of character
that my life has imbued me with.
No outside force is strong enough
to break who I am.
I know who I am.
I know myself!
Over the door to the Temple at Delphi,
where Apollo Hermaphroditis sat
are the words that guide me:
“Know Yourself”
I know who I am.
I know what I am.
I am myself,
and I am whole.
